Kosgulana Primary School is situated at Molkawa Village in Kaluthara District. There are over 170 students in the school ranging from Grade 1 to Grade 11. The field visit gave us an understanding that; the village requires support in terms of renovating the school but more importantly providing solutions to social issues. The School plays a vital role in the development of the village. The school does have basic facilities in place but in contrast, the student turnover rate is very high. The reason for this is the school environment is not up to a standard level. The main hall is used as classrooms for 3 grades at the same time and there’s no partitioning. As a result, there’s a lot of disturbance for the students during lectures. The school library is in poor status, the science lab requires renovations, multimedia and computer devices are not functioning well, music instruments are broken, and the play area looked stranded.

Apart from the school renovations, the Principal stressed the fact that there is a number of social issues that needed to be addressed in the village. The parents are not aware of the importance of education, and the poor economic status has led the children to have mental health-related issues.

In terms of the School library, the School principal wanted to install cupboards, fit the ceiling sheets, fix wall fans, and have a multimedia system, the Main hall requires a transferable partitioning system to divide the area into 3 classrooms and reduce the noise during lectures. Science labs do not have cupboards to keep the experimental tools.  Desktop computers in the IT lab were not functioning, the printer/projector needs repair, and a ventilator system was not available. The school is interested in having its own band, but the music instruments are in poor condition. Similar status is found with the sports equipments as well.
